Hertford Councillor John Hedley Dies Suddenly

Long-standing member of East Herts Council and Hertford Town Council, John Hedley, has died suddenly this weekend.

The 66-year-old Conservative councillor for Sele Ward who lived in Hutton Close in Sele Farm died on Saturday morning (19 March) whilst on holiday in Tunisia.

‘The news of Councillor Hedley's death is a great shock,' explained Cllr Tony Jackson, leader of East Herts Council, 'He was committed to supporting residents within the Sele ward and undertook his time as Chairman of the Audit committee with enthusiasm. His direct, no nonsense approach will be missed.’

Cllr Hedley, who attended Hertford Grammar School (now Richard Hale School) was closely involved with the Hertford and specifically the Sele community and had also been Chairman of Hertford Town FC and was its President. He was elected to the council in Sele Ward in May 2003.

Yesterday (21 March), as a mark of respect for John. The town council flew the flag at half mast.

‘The flag is flying at half-mast on Hertford Castle today,’ explained the council through its Twitter page, ‘following the sad news of the death of Cllr John Hedley, Councillor for Sele Ward.’

‘This is extremely sad news,’ added Cllr Dr Linda Radford, the Leader of Hertford Town Council, ‘John was a lively and colourful character and a committed Councillor. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Elizabeth and their family.’
